I'm thinking about trading in the S4...

Alas, my impending field assignment has me thinking about a cheap, fuel efficient car.  Something that I won't mind getting gravel dings and driving 60 miles a day in.  I might also have to park along the street at my new apartment.

The commute is almost all highway, and if you follow my posts at all, you know I prefer a diesel over a gas-electric hybrid.  At the top of my list is a Golf TDI: 5 doors (room for Zack and hockey equipment), above average economical interior, 35/44 mpg (most drivers are reporting better numbers).

Other cars I'm considering is a '91 MR2, '04ish Civic, Jetta TDI.

The MR2 would be a great find because then I could keep that car after I buy my next "real" car and use it to learn about the inner workings of cars.  Hopefully, one day I can turn it into a track car.

In the end, I may end up keeping the S4 just because I still love it more than anything else out there under 60 grand.  The fuel that I would save is only about $1500 a year but then there's also greater depreciation and potential damage.

What do you think?
